A'ja Wilson Just Became the 19th Player in WNBA History to Score 6,000 Points. On Pride Night. In The House 101-91

I need you to stop what you're doing and appreciate what just happened.

On Pride Night at Michelob Ultra Arena in front of a full house, on national television A'ja Wilson hit a 19-foot pull-up jumper off a Chelsea Gray dish at 4:56 in the fourth quarter and became the 19th player in the 30-year history of the WNBA to score 6,000 career points. She is the youngest to do it. She is the fastest to do it in just 278 games, shattering the previous record held by Diana Taurasi who did it in 291 games at 31 years and 61 days old. A'ja Wilson did it at 29 years and 304 days old.

And after the game Coach Becky Hammon said it best: "It seems like she's breaking a record every day."

She's not wrong. She literally cannot keep track anymore.

The Aces beat the Seattle Storm 101-91 to improve to 8-3. But tonight was about so much more than a win.

A'ja Wilson's stat line tonight was not human

34 points. 12 rebounds. 9 assists a career best, eclipsing her previous high of 8. 3 blocked shots. Let me put that in perspective for you. The best player in the world just posted a 34-point, 12-rebound, 9-assist, 3-block performance. On the same night she hit 6,000 career points. On the same night she passed Tangela Smith to move into No. 7 on the all-time blocks list with 559 career blocks. On the same night she extended her league-leading streak of consecutive 20-point games to nine straight. On the same night she recorded her fifth straight 20-point, 10-rebound double-double the most such double-doubles by any player this season.

Her nine assists led to 22 points. Her three three-pointers tied her career high something she has done just four other times. And it was just the 21st game in her 278-game career with zero stocks steals plus blocks combined.

Becky Hammon has coached some of the best players in the world. She has been around greatness her entire career. And even she has lost count of the records. "It seems like she's breaking a record every day." That's the head coach. That's the person who sees her every single day in practice. And even she is in awe.

That tells you everything.

Jackie Young was right there with her

On a night that belonged to A'ja Wilson, Jackie Young dropped 29 points and 6 assists and was absolutely essential to how this game played out. She scored 14 points in the fourth quarter alone, hitting a crucial three to push the lead to nine when Seattle was trying to make it a game. Wilson and Young combined for 63 points tonight. That is a closing unit that nobody in this league knows how to stop.

Young needs just seven rebounds to pass Adrienne Goodson for seventh in franchise history keep an eye on that milestone coming soon.

NaLyssa Smith and Chelsea Gray were rock solid

Smith had 16 points and 9 rebounds continuing her quietly dominant stretch of play this season. She scored 8 points during a 12-0 second quarter run that put this game away and has been one of the most consistent players on this roster through 11 games. Her 67.2 percent field goal percentage is not a typo. She is automatic right now.

Chelsea Gray added 12 points and 8 assists her 8 dimes led to 16 points for teammates. The all-time assists leader in franchise history doing what she always does making everyone around her better without making a sound about it.

Becky Hammon made history too

On a night full of records, Coach Hammon became the third-fastest coach in WNBA history to win 125 regular season games doing so in her 171st game. Only Michael Cooper (161 games) and Van Chancellor (165 games) got there faster. This franchise is built from top to bottom on excellence and that number reflects it.

The Storm gave them a game

Credit to Seattle they were not a pushover tonight. Dominique Malonga led them with 19 points, Natisha Heideman added 17, Awa Fam had 16, and Flau'jae Johnson chipped in 13. The Storm's bench outscored the Aces bench 26-7. They cut it to six multiple times in the third quarter and went on an 11-4 run early in the fourth to make it 76-70 before the Aces shut the door. Seattle is a young team that is going to be a problem for somebody later this season.

The moment

A 19 foot pull up jumper. Chelsea Gray with the assist. 4:56 in the fourth quarter. 6,000 career points. The House erupted.

A'ja Wilson's 6,004 points now rank No. 19 all-time just behind Seimone Augustus at No. 18 with 6,005 points, Lauren Jackson at No. 17 with 6,007, and Brittney Griner at No. 16 with 6,031. She is going to pass all three of them before this season is over. At the rate she is scoring right now that is not a prediction that is a certainty.

My take

I have been covering women's basketball for a long time and I have never seen anything like A'ja Wilson right now. Nine straight 20-point games. Five straight 20-10 double-doubles. Career-best nine assists. The youngest and fastest to 6,000 points in WNBA history. All-time blocks top 10. And she's 29 years old.

Her Game Network was in The House tonight and I am telling you the energy when that 6,000th point went in was something special. This city loves A'ja Wilson and A'ja Wilson loves this city back.

The Aces travel to Portland on Thursday June 11 for a 7pm tip at Moda Center the franchise's first game against the Fire since the Utah Starzz faced them on August 6, 2002. A brand new chapter in franchise history. Her Game Network will be there.
