The Gold Mamba Is Back

Day 3 of training camp is where things get real. The rust is gone, the jokes are done, and everybody is locked in and there was nobody better to sit down with on a day like this than Olympic gold medalist and 3x WNBA champion Jewell Loyd.

Standing on that hardwood with Jewell, you feel it immediately. The focus. The intentionality. This is not a player who shows up and goes through the motions. Everything is deliberate. Every rep has a purpose. And our conversation was exactly the same way.

The veteran voice

The biggest thing I took away from talking to Jewell was how seriously she takes her role as a leader on this roster. She talked about the importance of communication making sure her voice is heard not just by the starters, but by the rookies and the second unit too. For Jewell, being a star is not just about filling up the stat sheet. It's about making sure every single person on that floor knows their role, feels confident, and is ready when their number gets called.

That mindset? That's championship DNA. And the young players on this team are learning from somebody who has been there.

Mastering the "dirty work"

Here's what I love about Jewell Loyd she could talk about scoring all day and nobody would blame her. She's one of the best shot creators in the league. But she didn't want to talk about buckets. She wanted to talk about defense.

She emphasized that this team's goals can only be reached if they embrace what she called the "dirty work" the defensive rotations, the communication under pressure, the early morning drills that nobody sees but everybody benefits from. She was clear: the Aces are not going to out score their way to a fourth championship. They are going to out work everyone first, and the scoring will follow. "Championship habits," she said, are built right here in training camp long before the lights come on.

That kind of message coming from a six-time All-Star and a player who just signed here in free agency? It lands different. The veterans already in this locker room respect that. The rookies are taking notes.

The verdict

Jewell Loyd looks consistent, efficient, and genuinely happy to be in Las Vegas. The chemistry with her new teammates is still being built that's natural at Day 3 but you can already see the pieces clicking together. Her message to the fans was simple: she cannot wait to feel that Vegas energy inside the arena and get this season going.

If Day 3 is any indication, the rest of the league should be on high alert. The Gold Mamba has arrived back in the desert and she came to work.
