Rose City Shows Gritty Fight and Bright Spots Against Red-Hot Valkyries

The Rose City expansion squad showed tremendous heart and resilience on Tuesday night, battling hard on the road against a historic shooting performance from the Golden State Valkyries. While the final score favored the host team in front of a sold out crowd, Portland put together highly encouraging sequences and defensive flashes that prove this young roster is building a dangerous foundation.

From the opening tip, Rose City brought an aggressive mentality, refusing to back down even as Golden State found an unprecedented groove from the perimeter.

Fighting Through the Whirlwind

Portland entered the matchup looking to establish a physical presence, asserting themselves early with high energy defense. However, Golden State’s quick trigger transition game off long rebounds sparked a major second quarter surge that put Portland's defensive communication to the test.

Despite the Valkyries running out to a league season high 18 three pointers, Rose City stayed locked in, executing their sets and continuing to attack the paint. The relentless drive of the Portland roster is on full display in the clip below, which highlights the team's ability to slice through traffic, fight through aggressive double teams, and convert tough finishes at the rim against a heavy defensive front.

Key Player Highlights & Silver Linings

While playing against a team shooting 45.0% from deep is a tall task for any defense, Portland’s individual standouts brought plenty of reasons to smile:

  • Frontcourt Resilience: The grit down low was anchored by excellent positioning and second effort plays. Players like Emily Engstler (#21) brought intense defensive energy, fighting for positioning against a physical Golden State frontline.

  • Perimeter Attack: Rose City's guards showed great poise under pressure. Lexie Barker (#3) displayed phenomenal quickness and court awareness, navigating tight spaces to keep the offense moving and generating clean looks.

  • Veteran Leadership & Chemistry: Facing milestone opponents like Gabby Williams and Kaila Charles, Portland’s squad showed great defensive growth as the game went on, tightening their half court rotations and making adjustments that will pay massive dividends down the road.
