Vegas Showdown: Day 1 Recap — Players Era Women’s Championship

Day 1 of the inaugural Players Era Women’s Championship brought serious heat to the Michelob ULTRA Arena here in Vegas. We got two competitive, high level games to open the event, with fast starts, big runs, and some major performances on both sides. If Day 1 looked like this, Day 2 is about to be crazy.

Texas wasted no time setting the tone. The Longhorns were locked in on both ends early, closing the first quarter strong for a 20–10 lead. By halftime, it was 45–25 thanks to elite ball control just one first half turnover for Texas while UCLA gave up 10 that turned into 12 Texas points.

Rori Harmon was unstoppable. She dropped 26 points, went perfect from three (2-for-2) and at the line (6-for-6), and added five assists. Madison Booker put up 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists, with Jordan Lee (13) and Justice Carlton (10) also scoring in double figures. Plus, it marked Vic Schaefer’s 150th win at Texas.

Bruins Comeback Attempt

UCLA didn’t fold. Kiki Rice and Gianna Kneepkens both finished with 17, and Kneepkens caught fire in the third with 10 points on a perfect 4 for 4 run, including two threes as UCLA outscored Texas 22–17.

The Bruins kept their foot on the gas, cutting the lead to just four with 4:31 left after a huge 24–7 surge led by Rice. But down the stretch, Harmon hit two clutch jumpers, and UCLA couldn’t convert another field goal the rest of the way. The 20 total turnovers were the difference.

Game 2: South Carolina’s Interior Game Overpowers Duke

Final: No. 2 South Carolina 83, Duke 66

Game 2 was all about physicality. Duke took a 15–14 lead after the first, but South Carolina flipped the energy immediately with a dominant 26–12 second quarter and never gave it back.

The Paint Was All Gamecocks

South Carolina completely controlled the interior 58 of their 83 points came inside. That’s almost 70% of their offense. Duke had no answer for their size, strength, and pace in the paint.

Madina Okot led the way with 23 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 steals for her fifth double-double. Freshman Joyce Edwards continues to impress, dropping 22 points and a team-high six assists. Ta’Niya Latson (12) and Raven Johnson (10) also hit double figures.

Blue Devils’ Highlights

Toby Fournier led Duke with 16 points, Riley Nelson added 14, and Ashlon Jackson chipped in 11. Duke had stretches where they pushed back even trimming the lead to single digits but South Carolina’s paint dominance was too much to overcome.
