Madina Okot Set a Career High and the Dream Held On Against Toronto. 94-87
The Atlanta Dream improved to 2-0 all-time against the expansion Toronto Tempo with a 94-87 win and while the final margin doesn't look overwhelming, this was a complete team performance with production coming from every single starter and a rookie center who is starting to look like a real find.
This starting five Canada, Gray, Howard, Hillmon, and Reese is now 12-3 together. That number keeps climbing and it is not a coincidence.
Madina Okot had her best game as a pro
Let's start here because this is the most exciting storyline of the night. Madina Okot came off the bench and scored a career-high 18 points, shooting an efficient 7 for 9 from the field in just 18 minutes. She also grabbed 7 rebounds. This is the same Madina Okot who didn't pick up a basketball until she was 16 years old and was the 13th pick in this year's draft. Tonight she looked like a player who belongs in this league right now, not someday.
Atlanta's front office talked about her unlimited upside on draft night. Eighteen points on 78 percent shooting says they were right.
Rhyne Howard caught fire from deep
20 points on 7 for 17 shooting, and her team high five three pointers going 5 for 11 from beyond the arc were a huge part of why Atlanta was able to build the cushion they needed. Howard also grabbed 7 rebounds. When she's hitting shots like this from the perimeter, this offense becomes incredibly difficult to game plan against.
Jordin Canada was the engine again
13 assists and 11 points her second consecutive game with double-digit assists and another double-double in what has become a habit for her this season. Canada continues to be the connective tissue of this offense, finding the open player possession after possession and controlling the pace of the game from start to finish.
Allisha Gray was steady and disruptive
18 points and she tied her career high with 5 steals. That defensive activity matters Gray was getting into passing lanes and creating extra possessions for Atlanta all night on top of her usual scoring production. She continues to be one of the most complete two-way players on this roster.
Angel Reese controlled the glass
11 points and a team-high 9 rebounds, continuing to do what Angel Reese does dominate the boards every single night regardless of matchup. She also added 4 assists, showing the passing development that has made her even more valuable to this offense this season.
Isobel Borlase chipped in off the bench
8 points on 3 for 10 shooting including 2 made threes in 20 minutes. The rookie continues to find her footing and contribute meaningful minutes for a Dream team that is deep enough to get production from multiple spots on the bench.
Toronto made them work for it
Full credit to the Tempo in just their inaugural season they gave Atlanta a real game. Marina Mabrey led them with 23 points on 8 for 17 shooting including 3 made threes, Izzy Harrison added 21 points and 10 rebounds. Toronto shot 45 percent as a team and kept this competitive into the fourth quarter. This expansion team is going to cause problems for people as the season goes on.
My take
Five players in double figures. A career night from a rookie center who is only getting better. Jordin Canada racking up assists like it's nothing. Allisha Gray doing damage on both ends. This Dream team is 12-3 with this starting group and the depth behind them just keeps producing.
Her Game Network covers the Dream all season and Madina Okot's emergence is officially a storyline worth watching closely from here on out.
